When the thermometer drops and Three Degrees is a reality rather than a Motown Band we need to look to our skincare regime, and make the necessary changes. Just as we put on our winter warmers we need to winter-proof our skin if we are to avoid chapped lips and dry, sensitive faces
The key thing is to remember that cold, dry wintery air strips the moisture from your skin. Just to complicate matters, so does the effects of upping the thermostat on your central heating. Your skin really is hit with a double whammy at this time of year!
No matter whether your skin is dry, oily or sensitive, moisturising in winter is an absolute must! Alcohol based toners can add to the problem of drying the skin, , so after applying your moisturiser (a little more than usual, or a slightly richer version) miss out the toning, or if you feel you must, then make sure it’s alcohol –free.
When it comes to cleansing, avoid soap based products (again these can be drying) and use one with an oil or cream base. Do remember that using oil on oily skin does not make your skin more oily. Often an oily complexion is a result of the skin being stripped of its natural oils by the products you are using, and then going into overdrive in producing more natural oils in order to compensate ( Look out for future posts on using oils in skincare)
Your lips also need extra attention in cold weather. Licking them actually dries them out more, so keep a balm handy and apply regularly . Our Spearmint and Tea Tree Nurture Balm (£6.50 15ml) protects and soothes not just your lips but your hands and nails too so you might want to keep a tin in your handbag
Remember to moisturise the bits that no one sees as much in the Winter too – your legs and feet still need some TLC to avoid them needing emergency treatment come Spring. (Our Nurture Balm is great for feet too!)
There are a few things you can do to reduce the effects of central heating by the way, such as placing bowls of water close to radiators, or having plants that require regular misting. You could always invest in a cold water humidifier – your skin will thank you for it!
So enjoy the snow, be careful on the ice, wrap up against the wind and rain –and show yourself some love by winter proofing your skincare regime.
